Saratov was founded in 1590 as a fortress to protect the trade route along the Volga from nomadic raids. In the 20th century, it turned into a large industrial center stretching along the coast. Opened in 1965, the automobile bridge over the Volga with a length of about 3 km is one of the longest in Europe.
