The first stone church in the city was built and then restored several times after fires on this site. But in 1937 it was blown up, and a park was laid out on the empty square. In 2010, for the thousandth anniversary of Yaroslavl, the cathedral was rebuilt.
A masterpiece of ancient Russian architecture and painting and one of the most recognizable symbols of the city, it was built in 1647-1650 by the wealthy merchant brothers Boniface and Ioanniky Skripin.
This cathedral is the oldest surviving church in Yaroslavl.
