The largest cathedral in the Northern capital was built over the course of 40 years. The current building is the fourth one built in the spirit of late classicism according to the design of the architect Auguste Montferrand.
The Hermitage is considered a treasure trove of world painting. Founded in 1764 as a private art gallery of Catherine II, today it is a museum of world significance.
The Kunstkamera, or “room of curiosities,” is known primarily for its collection of “freaks” — preserved embryos and remains of infants with various developmental anomalies.
The defensive structure was built on Hare Island in 1703, but never took part in military actions.
